When we recommend that our clients rewrite or edit the content on their existing sites for better search engine optimization, we often hear complaints that their website is too difficult or too expensive to change because they have to pay their webmaster to make every little edit. And this is often the case with static websites, ones that were built in programs like Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression Web then uploaded to the web server. To make the changes themselves, business owners would need to buy their own copy of the software and learn to use it or learn to edit the pages manually using a text editor. Both of these choices require learning new software and/or learning HTML coding. And let’s face it: this is certainly not the most economical search engine optimization solution for busy business owners, whose time is better spent on their business.
WordPress, the perfect site-building solution
At Portland Internet Design we build all of our sites in WordPress. We use WordPress because it offers our website clients the most control and flexibility over the content on their site. Created originally as a blogging program, WordPress has evolved over the years into a solid and streamlined site building and content managing tool. Here are some of the advantages:
- WordPress is entirely web based. From the get-go, your site exists on the web server. That means that your site is backed up by the web host and that you can always access it without worrying about which version of the files you are editing.
- WordPress keeps the content and the design of your site separate. You can add and change your content any time you want without worrying about breaking anything. WordPress assumes from the start that you will be changing and updating your site and it’s designed to handle new content easily, be it blog posts, page additions, or text changes.
- The WordPress administration panel is easy to use. People with little or no web experience will feel comfortable because it makes sense and is well designed. Instructions are written in plain language and there are many, many tutorials and help documents available.
- WordPress is free, and comes with an amazingly dedicated geek squad. As an open source platform with an avid, dedicated, and intelligent community of users constantly updating and improving it, WordPress represents the best web technology money can buy. Oh, right. It’s free!
- SEO is easy to add and edit. WordPress plugins (mini programs that add functionality) and themes (design packages that give your site a particular look and feel) add easy search engine optimization functionality so that you can add and edit unique metadata on each page of your site, as well as each blog post. Our favorite theme, Thesis, combines both: built-in areas to add SEO to each page and post as well as the added bonus of a good looking design right out of the box.
Supplement your website with a WordPress blog
Even if you don’t want to rebuild your existing website in WordPress or your budget won’t allow a total re-do, consider adding a WordPress blog as a subdomain or a subdirectory to your site. This method represents the easiest and most economical short-term search engine optimization solution for your web presence. Have questions about how to do this? We’d be happy to help!
